Background:
Spectactularly located on the islands of Georgian Bay since
1947, Camp Hurontario's unique small group philosophy and non-competitive
atmosphere has long built self confidence, strong team skills
and lasting friendships. Hurontario's outdoor program can be
customized to suit all age groups and curriculum needs. Week
long or weekend programs start in May and continue until mid
June and also run from late Augsust until Thanksgiving. The
spring and fall program can accommodate up to 100 students.
Over 300 acres of islands and mainland properties provide a
uniques and extensive natural setting for outdoor activities.
The camp's location is just a two hour drive north of Toronto.
Water Sports
With many kilometers of private shoreline and access to the
Thirty Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay, Camp Hurontario is
an ideal location for developing canoeing, kayaking and sea
kayaking skills. With shallow water beaches and sheltered
bays, it is fun and easy to teach basic canoeing and kayaking
skills. Once students feel comfortable with the fundamentals,
they can head out for cook outs and overnights on one of the
camp's private islands.
Nature Study
Hurontario's emphasis is on appreciation of the natural environment.
Examples of our nature study activities include turtle tracking
and underwater biology with masks and snorkels. The camp has
even banded birds and butterflies and is equipped with a parabolic
microphone to listen closely to the sounds of the wilderness.
The camp has many inland lakes, beaver dams, and swamps. A
large Great Blue Heron rookery is nearby. Many graduate students
have come to Hurontario to research rare species that can
be found in the area.
Art Program
Hurontario has a long history of landscape artists at the
camp. Many including A.Y. Jackson, have come to the camp for
the classic Ontario scenery that made the Group of Seven famous.
Students have the choice of charcoal sketching, watercolours,
oils, and acrylics. Aspiring artists can search by canoe for
the perfect vista and then ser up for the afternoon following
a shoreline lunch.
Additional Activities
Camp Hurontario's dining hall not only serves up great food,
but provides the ideal setting for ice breaking games and
theme meals. Our newly renovated recreation hall can comfortably
accommodate leadership and group development programs. A piano,
guitars, and other musical instruments in combination with
ping pong, shuffleboard and fussball are sure to provide relaxed
opportunities to mix socially.
High Adventure Challenge Program
Other exciting aspects of our outdoor education program include
our rockclimbing wall, free climbing, ropes course, high element
and 250' zip line. These challenges are perfect for working
on both team building skills and individual accomplishments.
Archery Range
The camp is well equipped with traditional and compound bows.
The range can be adjusted for the experienced archer as well
as those new to the sport to insure that everyone gets a bullseye!
