Camper FAQs

  • What if I'm homesick?

Counsellors are trained to deal with this not uncommon happening at camp. Being sure that staff are with the camper who is homesick in the mornings early and always until they are asleep is important. The Director of the section will make sure that the group dynamics are good and not a source of the problem. Special activities which the camper who is homesick , like an early morning fishing trip with his Director and special visits to the camp kitchen assist. Reassuring any homesick camper that it is normal to feel this way at the start also helps.

  • How do I choose the activities I go to each day?

At Hurontario campers choose their activities with their group and their counsellors every three days. This assures that each camper is involved in the democratic process of giving and taking . It also means there is flexibility and non-school rigidity to our programming which the boys really enjoy. Each day is different and full of activities which can be changed to adapt to weather or such.

  • Can I be in the same cabin as my friend?

Of course you can be with your friend. All we want to be sure is that you and your friend are about the same age so that your interests will be similar . If some camper knows a group of boys, we like them to choose two buddies to be in the group so that the 'hockey 'tem is not on one side of a cabin! WE also will mix new campers with returning campers. Meeting and making special camp friends is a big part of what camp is about.

  • What if I don't know anyone at camp?

If you don't know someone do not worry. Our small group structure and the fact that you stay with your group and your counsellors to-do activities will quickly assure you of new camp friends. also, the first week of camp is full of special mixer activities so that you will get to meet nad know many people . The staff are really good at helping everyone make friends as that is one of the big reasons they return every year to Hurontario - to see their friends.

  • What can I get at the tuck shop?

Hurontario has four meals a day with a wonderful snack at night. Pizza on the point; come make your own sundae; homemade goodies, fruit and cheese and crackers are only a few of the wonderful evening snacks. Hence we avoid having a tuck shop with any junk food. WE also request that none be sent to camp so the division of the spoils and the spoiling of mealtime appetites can be avoided this way.

  • Can my parents visit me?

Visitors days are the second week of each session. Bring a picnic, a bathing suit and spend the day enjoying seeing Hurontario in action. Your son will be your excellent guide.
