  • What if my son is homesick?

    Counsellors are trained to deal with this not uncommon happening at camp. Being sure that staff are with the camper who is homesick in the mornings early and always until they are asleep is important. The Director of the section will make sure that the group dynamics are good and not a source of the problem. Special activities which the camper who is homesick , like an early morning fishing trip with his Director and special visits to the camp kitchen assist. Reassuring any homesick camper that it is normal to feel this way at the start also helps.


  • When can I visit?

    Visitors days are the second week of each session. Bring a picnic, a bathing suit and spend the day enjoying seeing Hurontario in action. Your son will be your excellent guide.


  • Where are you located?

    We are located on a beautiful island just two hours north of Toronto. Take Twelve Mile Bay Road off Highway 400 just north of Honey Harbour and just south of Parry Sound.

  • How do we get to the camp?

    Parents on visitors days call the Moose Deer Point Marina and reserve taxi boats to bring them for a visit.


  • Where does your staff come from?

    Staff at Hurontario are home grown. With over 87 present of all our staff having nine summers at least at the camp, the staff is the strength of Hurontario as they know the camp, are highly skilled and love being with kids.


  • Why do you have 3-½ week sessions?

    Three and a half weeks means that we are not constantly moving campers in and out as we would if there were two week session .Hence, the group is not continually being interrupted . Further, to acquire a good level of skill in the activities offered the extra week guarantees that the campers have the opportunity to do each sport enough to become skilled. We also offer a fine tripping program which requires the extra time. lastly and most important it takes time for campers to adjust to cmap life, and friends. To gain independence, self-reliance and social skills, two weeks is too short as three days are given to moving and to packing.


  • Do you have 2 week sessions?

    Yes. We offer two week long sessions in both July and August for boys aged 8-10. More information is available here.


  • What is your safety record?

    Hurontario has an excellent safety record. A full training session before camp teaches and practises the safety routines with all the staff. All the counsellors stay with the groups during the day and know their campers well. ,There is continuous observation of what is happening within the group. Also ,all staff have a first aid course paid for by the camp. The Directors of the camp are also highly trained in first aid .


  • Is there a doctor at camp?

    Hurontario has a doctor at the camp at all times.


  • What is your lifejacket policy?

    Lifejackets are on whenever anyone is on the water. This is Hurontario's policy and is one which we firmly adhere to so that all campers and staff are safe when in a boat of any sort.


  • Do you stress earning swim levels?

    Swim levels are a big thing at Hurontario and indeed we were the proud winners of the Chapman Cup which is awarded to the camp with the strongest swim program.


  • How do I communicate with my son?
    (letters, parcels, email, phone, etc.)


    Letters are the means of communicating with your son. One of the aspects of camp life is to help young people gain independence and the ability to be self reliant. Hence, a break from fax, emails and having letters to read is a nice change.


  • Do all campers go on trips?

    All campers will choose to go on trips ranging from overnights ,to small trips in the bay and to trips in the French river basin area. WE also offer trips in our amazing northern outpost which is where the 14 year old campers take a trip. Our trips in the Arctic and Labrador for our most senior campers are very popular.


  • How do handle dietary/medical needs?

    Hurontario has an excellent kitchen staff of six trained people. We can handle most dietary needs which will be talked over with the owner of the camp to make sure a child's special food needs can be met. Similarly with medical needs ,the doctor will receive a letter form the parents and a phone call if wished to make sure any medical needs are thoroughly understood and taken care of at camp.


  • What is your tuck shop policy?

    Hurontario has four meals a day with a wonderful snack at night. Pizza on the point; come make your own sundae; homemade goodies, fruit and cheese and crackers are only a few of the wonderful evening snacks. Hence we avoid having a tuck shop with any junk food. WE also request that none be sent to camp so the division of the spoils and the spoiling of mealtime appetites can be avoided this way.
