Parent FAQs

What if my son is homesick?
Counsellors are trained to deal with this not uncommon happening
at camp. Being sure that staff are with the camper who is
homesick in the mornings early and always until they are asleep
is important. The Director of the section will make sure that
the group dynamics are good and not a source of the problem.
Special activities which the camper who is homesick , like
an early morning fishing trip with his Director and special
visits to the camp kitchen assist. Reassuring any homesick
camper that it is normal to feel this way at the start also
helps.

When can I visit?

picnic, a bathing suit and spend the day enjoying seeing Hurontario
in action. Your son will be your excellent guide.

Where does your staff come from?
Staff at Hurontario are home grown. With over 87 present of
all our staff having nine summers at least at the camp, the
staff is the strength of Hurontario as they know the camp,
are highly skilled and love being with kids.

Why do you have 3-½ week sessions?
Three and a half weeks means that we are not constantly moving
campers in and out as we would if there were two week session
.Hence, the group is not continually being interrupted . Further,
to acquire a good level of skill in the activities offered
the extra week guarantees that the campers have the opportunity
to do each sport enough to become skilled. We also offer a
fine tripping program which requires the extra time. lastly
and most important it takes time for campers to adjust to
cmap life, and friends. To gain independence, self-reliance
and social skills, two weeks is too short as three days are
given to moving and to packing.

Do you have 2 week sessions?
Yes. We offer two week long sessions in both July and August for boys aged 8-10. More information is available here.

Hurontario has an excellent safety record. A full training
session before camp teaches and practises the safety routines
with all the staff. All the counsellors stay with the groups
during the day and know their campers well. ,There is continuous
observation of what is happening within the group. Also ,all
staff have a first aid course paid for by the camp. The Directors
of the camp are also highly trained in first aid .

Hurontario has a doctor at the camp at all times.

Lifejackets are on whenever anyone is on the water. This is
Hurontario's policy and is one which we firmly adhere to so
that all campers and staff are safe when in a boat of any
sort.

Swim levels are a big thing at Hurontario and indeed we were
the proud winners of the Chapman Cup which is awarded to the
camp with the strongest swim program.

How do I communicate with my son?
(letters, parcels, email, phone, etc.)
Letters are the means of communicating with your son. One
of the aspects of camp life is to help young people gain independence
and the ability to be self reliant. Hence, a break from fax,
emails and having letters to read is a nice change.

Do all campers go on trips?
All campers will choose to go on trips ranging from overnights
,to small trips in the bay and to trips in the French river
basin area. WE also offer trips in our amazing northern outpost
which is where the 14 year old campers take a trip. Our trips
in the Arctic and Labrador for our most senior campers are
very popular.

How do handle dietary/medical
needs?
Hurontario has an excellent kitchen staff of six trained people.
We can handle most dietary needs which will be talked over
with the owner of the camp to make sure a child's special
food needs can be met. Similarly with medical needs ,the doctor
will receive a letter form the parents and a phone call if
wished to make sure any medical needs are thoroughly understood
and taken care of at camp.

What is your tuck shop policy?
Hurontario has four meals a day with a wonderful snack at
night. Pizza on the point; come make your own sundae; homemade
goodies, fruit and cheese and crackers are only a few of the
wonderful evening snacks. Hence we avoid having a tuck shop
with any junk food. WE also request that none be sent to camp
so the division of the spoils and the spoiling of mealtime
appetites can be avoided this way.
